What is Universal Beam and Column

The Universal Beam and Universal Column were introduced in the late 1950s and were based on American patterns, and rolled in new 'universal' rolling mills. They replaced a range of sections which had been developed by various UK manufacturers over the preceding century.
Universal Beam: A standardised steel component which is I-shaped in cross section. Over 70 different sizes are available in two main steel grades.
